Jordan pubic debt soars to JOD25bln in Q1


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, May 22 (Petra) -- Jordan's gross public debt at the end of March 2016 amounted to JOD25.063 billion or 92.9 per cent of projected 2016 GDP by the end of March compared to 93.4 per cent of GDP at the end of 2015.

According to data released by the ministry of finance, the National Electricity Company (NEPCO) and Water Authority (WAJ) debt amounted to JOD6.7 billion.

Net outstanding public debt (domestic and external) increased at the end of March by JD496.1 million or 2.2 per cent to finance the budget deficit and the guaranteed loans for (NEPCO) and (WAJ), reaching JOD23.344 billion or 86.6 per cent of projected 2016 GDP, compared to JOD22.847 billion or 85.8 per cent of GDP in 2015.

In order to bring more transparency to the fiscal data, the Ministry of Finance adopted in calculating the ratio of public debt to GDP a new mechanism to take into account GDP projections of 2016, calculated on a monthly basis adjusted according to the quarterly actual published data by the Department of Statistics.
