UAE- Apple ramps up support for accessibility


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Apple announced that its Apple Stores in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates and Abu Dhabi's Yas Mall are celebratingGlobal Accessibility Awareness Day todayby offering a series of educationalaccessibilityworkshops.

This is "in support of one of our core values and out of our strong belief in the importance of accessibility", the Cupertino, California-headquartered tech giant said in a statement.

In addition to this, Applehas focused on updating its accessibilityapps collection to create moreawareness around accessibility.

Apple has lined up activities that are aimed at exploring various available accessibility features that allow customers with special needs to enjoy more ofwhat iPhone, iPad and iPod touch have to offer.

The Apple Store at Mall of the Emirates will be holding three workshops: "Discover Accessibility: Hearing for iPad and iPhone" 12:15pm, which will highlight iPhone and iPadfeaturesthat assist people who are deaf or hard of hearing; "Discover Accessibility: Vision for iPad and iPhone" (2:15pm), which introduces theassistive technologies on iPhone and iPad for people who are blind or have low vision; and "Discover Accessibility: Motor Skills for iPad and iPhone" (6:15pm), which will showcasehow iOS devices makes the multi-touch screen easily accessible to people who find it hard to tap or use gestures.

The Apple Store in Yas Mall, meanwhile, will be focusing on the Mac's main accessibility features by offering the "Discover Accessibility: Motor Skills Mac"workshop (5pm),whichwill focus on showing customers howto use gestures to navigate and use their voice to control Mac, and the "Discover Accessibility: Vision for Mac"workshop (6:30pm), whichwill introduce theassistive technologies in OS X that help people who are blind or have low vision use a Mac. "Discover Accessibility: Vision for iPad and iPhone" will also be held here at 11am.

Apple also bared the top five vision apps: MBraille, which brings a mobile braille keyboard, with free features that allow users to type and edit text messages; Voice Dream Reader, a widely-acclaimed desktop-class app that reads articles, documents and books out loud, which lets you "read with your ears; Color Identifier, which uses the camera on an iPhone or iPod Touch to identify the names of colours in real-time; LookTel Money Reader, which instantly recognises currency and speaks the denomination, enabling people experiencing visual impairments or blindness to quickly and easily identify bills; and Voice Dream Mail, which works by speech and touch, allowing the user to efficiently go through their e-mail inbox without having to read it.
