UN envoy urges Yemeni stakeholders to work together for peace

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, May 18 (KUNA) -- UN Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed reiterated his call for the Yemeni negotiating teams to adopt a more constructive and responsible approach to the negotiations on the political, security and prisoners.
In a press release Wednesday night, he reaffirmed the readiness of the international community, notably the United Nations, to help the Yemeni parties reach a mutually-acceptable political solution and put an end to the human and material damage resulting from the armed conflict.
"Though the sponsors of the peace talks stand ready to offer any necessary help, the Yemeni negotiators are solely responsible for finding a comprehensive and enduring settlement to the conflict," Cheikh Ahmed made clear.
Regarding his meeting with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah earlier today in the presence of the Yemeni chief delegates, he said the meeting stressed the need of continuing the UN-brokered talks to help restore Yemen's security and stability.
Cheikh Ahmed noted that he met with the government delegation last night and held consultations with the representatives of the General People's Congress and Ansarullah movement today.
His Highness the Amir received the Yemeni chief delegates at Bayan Palace in the presence of the Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah to assess the progress made by the talks so far.
The audience gathered Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdul-Malik Abdul-Jalil Al-Mikhlafi, head of the General People's Congress delegation Aref Al-Zouka and the head of Ansarullah movement delegation Mohammad Faletah.
Last night, the government delegation decided to suspend their participation in the peace talks and said they will not return to the talks unless the other two delegations (of the General People's Congress and Ansarullah movement) make written pledges to adhere to the six fundamental principles of the talks.
The six points of reference of the talks are the UN Security Council Resolution 2216, the GCC initiative for Yemen and its executive mechanisms, the outcomes of the previous rounds of the national dialogue, full recognition by all parties of the legitimate government, the results of the UN-brokered consultations in Biel - Switzerland, and the framework proposed by Cheikh Ahmed.
