Trump, Sanders win Oregon primary, Clinton claims win in Kentucky

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, May 18 (KUNA) -- Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders won their parties' respective primaries in Oregon late Tuesday while Hillary Clinton claimed a win for herself in the too close to call Kentucky primary.

Trump, the only Republican remaining in the race for the presidency, gained 17 delegates and 67 percent of the vote with 61 percent of precincts reporting.

"Congratulations to the movement, we have just won the great state of Oregon. The vote percentage is even higher than anticipated. Thank you," said Trump on Twitter.

Despite having dropped out of the race, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Ohio Governor John Kasich respectively received 16 and 17 percent of the vote and will obtain three delegates each.

For the Democrats, Sanders gained 28 delegates with a 53 percent vote and Clinton accumulated 24 delegates with 47 percent, according to 61 percent of precincts reporting.

Earlier, the Democrats held a primary in Kentucky were Clinton obtained less than a percentage point in the polls over Sanders. Although officials said the race was too close to call, the Clinton campaign claimed a victory in the State on Twitter. The Sanders campaign has since indicated that it will look at the primary numbers and later decide if it will request a recount, according to NBC News.

The former Secretary of State currently has 2,291 delegates, while Sanders has 1,528. Leading into the Oregon primary, Sanders was aiming to gain 67 percent of the State's support, the percentage he needs to win in the remaining states in order to obtain 2,383 delegates and thus seal a nomination.
