Twin blasts kill, wound 18 N. Pakistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISLAMABAD, May 18 (KUNA) -- A policeman was killed and 17 other people were injured when two remote-controlled bombs detonated sequentially in Pakistan's northern Peshawar city on Wednesday, said police.

Police Cantonment Kashif Zulfiqar said the first bomb exploded as a police van was passing by in Peshawar's Mithra area, injuring a policeman and a pedestrian. As Bomb Disposal Squad reached the scene, a second bomb was detonated. Another official, SSP Abdul Majid Marwat confirmed that the injured include 11 Squad members, Counter-terrorism Department personnel and police and six civilians. Around 4.5 kilograms of explosives were used in the bombs, he added.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned the blasts and directed concerned authorities to ensure special medical care to the injured. (end) sbk.hb
