UAE eyes to strengthen agriculture and trade ties with Mexico

Abu Dhabi, 17th May, 2016 (WAM) - Mohammed Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz Al Shehhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy for Economic Affairs, has met with Jose Calzada Rovirosa, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food of Mexico, at the UAE Ministry's headquarters in Dubai to explore possible agreements between the two countries, particularly in trade and agriculture.
Joining the UAE Undersecretary was Humaid bin Butti Al Muhairi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy for Commercial Affairs and Consumer Protection Sector, while the Mexican Minister was accompanied by several senior Mexican Government officials.
During the meeting, Al Shehhi discussed the prospects between the two countries in terms of expanding trade and investment between the Middle East and countries in Latin America, focusing on agriculture and food, tourism, aviation and private investments.
Al Shehhi said: "The UAE is keen to strengthen its economic and trade relations with countries in Latin America, particularly in fast emerging economies such as Mexico. Mexico has a strong agricultural sector offering vast opportunities for growth domestically and internationally, which fits naturally with the UAE's economic agenda on food security."
For his part, Rovirosa said that Mexico is looking to expand its international trade partners that have been traditionally captured by developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Europe. The Minister noted positive interest to increase the volume of his country's existing trade with the UAE, given its steady position as a commercial hub in the region, particularly for the promotion of Mexico's agricultural exports such as meats and crops.
