Two earthquakes hit Aqaba in Jordan

AMMAN, 16th May, 2016 (WAM) -- An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted the southern Jordanian city of Aqaba at dawn on Monday. After about half an hour, another quake, measuring 2.5, hit the west of the city.

The first earthquake was located at a depth of about 13 km south of Aqaba on the Red Sea, and was felt by the residents, Jordan News Agency, Petra, quoted the Head of Jordan's Seismological Observatory, Dr. Mahmoud Qaryouti, as saying.

The second earthquake occurred at a depth of about 18 km near the city's north-western borders with Palestine.

In April, two earthquakes measuring 3.9 and 3.1 on the Richter scale hit the Dead Sea region.
