Oman- PACP decision bans sale of imported sausage brand

In a recent decision, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has banned the distribution and sale of a certain batch of Zwan brand of chicken sausages.

Dr Saeed bin Khamis al Kaabi, chairman of PACP issued Decision 205/2016 in this regard, which states that the food item, a product of Holland, has failed laboratory tests, which revealed that it was harmful to consumers' health.

According to a press release, Article 1 of the decision bans the sale of Zwan 10 Hotdog Chicken Sausages with 20/10/2015 and 19/10/2016 as the production and expiry dates respectively. Article 2 states that stores across the sultanate should adhere to the decision and withdraw all stocks from the market to safeguard public health.

Article 3 states that all those who contravene this decision will be fined RO500. The penalty will be doubled in case of repeat violations. If they still continue, a fine of RO50 per day, but not exceeding RO2,000 will be imposed, besides court proceedings, according to the release.

The decision comes under the Consumer Protection Law no 66/2014 which give the PACP chief the right to ban products that are found to be harmful and fail to meet Oman's stringent health safety standards. It also gives him the authority to issue alerts and advisories to consumers as a way of safeguarding their health and consumer rights, the press release added.
