US Senate plans to block heavy water purchase from Iran fail

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, May 11 (KUNA) -- An attempt to block US plans to buy heavy water (a nuclear substance) from Iran was rejected by the Senate on Wednesday.

The amendment to halt the USD 8.6 million deal for 32 million metric tonnes of the substance, sponsored by Republican Senator Tom Cotton, did not receive the 60-vote quota - in a 57 with and 42 against vote.

The proposed provision would have halted the deal reached in April which limits Iran's possession of the substance.

Heavy water is not a radioactive material, and instead has research and medical applications. (end) sd
