Trump, Sanders win West Virginia, Nebraska

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON May 11 (KUNA) -- Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders won their parties' respective primaries in West Virginia and Nebraska Tuesday though for Sanders Nebraska was mostly a formality as delegates there had been assigned at a caucus back in March with 14 going to Sanders and 10 going to his rival and frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
Trump the only Republican remaining in the race for the presidency won nearly 75 percent of the vote and got the three delegates available in West Virginia.
In Nebraska the billionaire businessman garnered nearly 60 percent of the vote taking all 36 available delegates. The names of his former rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich were still on the ballot though both dropped out of the race last week.
Meanwhile Sanders's win in West Virginia with 50 percent of the vote compared to Clinton's 39 percent was considered an upset but all it does is slow down Clinton's path to the nomination in July.
The way delegates will be divided was still not known late Tuesday.
The former secretary of state currently has 2238 delegates while Sanders has 1147. Sanders have repeatedly pledged to stay in the race until the July convention in a bid to influence the national discussion.
A total of 2383 delegates are needed to seal the Democratic nomination for the White House. (end) ys.hb
