Russia, US FMs call for retaining lull in Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW May 10 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US counterpart John Kerry stressed in a phone call the necessity of consolidating the cessation of hostilities in Syria except for Al-Nusra Front and the so-called Islamic State.

They affirmed the importance of supporting negotiations between Syrians in Geneva and discussed means of investing efforts of International Syria Support Group (ISSG) so as to achieve these goals said a Russian statement on Tuesday.

The two sides also discussed the settlement between Palestinians and Israelis it added.

In a statement posted on Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: "The Russian side will continue efforts aimed at the cessation of violence and bloodshed as well as at countering the terrorist threat [in Syria]" welcoming similar efforts by Washington.

She stressed that the implementation of the agreements brokered by Russia and the US would help facilitate political reforms and bring peace and reconciliation to the Syrian nation.

She also appealed to Washington to practice pressure on opposition groups to fully disassociate themselves from Al-Nusra Front.

Meanwhile Russia and Iran called necessarily for confronting the IS and the front.

During a telephone conversation Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined the urgency of implementing the UN Security Council resolutions 2254 and 2268. (end) as.hm
