Morocco Expects Poor Cereal Harvest of 33.5 Million Quintals


(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Moroccan authorities said that prospects for the production of the three main cereals in crop year 2015-2016 are estimated at 33.5 million quintals decreasing by 70% compared to crop year 2014-2015 which was marked by a record number of 110 million quintals.

The forecast production of soft wheat is estimated at 18.6 million quintals followed by hard wheat (8.7million quintals) and barley (6.2million quintals) said the ministry of agriculture and fisheries in a statement.

The fall’s leguminous plants production will also be affected as was the fall’s cereals and will drop by 40 to 60% it said.

Except for the poor cereal campaign the crop year is globally posting good performances mainly for the sectors of fruit tree cultivation which is expected to grow by 15% of olive tree (+24%) and of citrus fruit (+7%).

The crop year 2015-2016 was characterized by scarcity in rainfall and a rise in temperature during autumn which is the season of cereal growth it added.
