UN envoy urges Yemenis to intensify efforts for peace deal


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT May 9 (KUNA) -- UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed urged participants in the UN-mediated Yemeni peace talks in Kuwait to intensify all efforts in order to come out with a comprehensive political solution for the ongoing crisis in Yemen.

The Special Envoy commended in a press statement Sunday the Yemeni parties for their responsible attitude saying "I salute the delegations' cooperation today. There is no doubt that we are at a true crossroads." "We are either moving towards peace or going back to square one. What I heard from both delegations is promising but we shouldn't forget that the challenges are enormous and the gap between them is large" he noted.

The Yemen Peace Talks resumed today after it failed to convene on Sunday due to divergence of views Ahmed said adding that the committees are also scheduled to resume their work tomorrow morning.

The three working groups on political issues security matters and prisoners and detainees held their meetings simultaneously tackling the written proposals tabled by the delegations last week he said.

Meanwhile the UN envoy met with heads of the two delegations to discuss developments on the ground and the resolution of outstanding issues. He also held bilateral meetings with ambassadors and officials.

He expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for supporting the work of the De-escalation and Coordination Committee and the Local De-escalation Committees.

He further urged other countries to provide support to this process expressing gratitude to the State of Kuwait for its unlimited support to the ongoing consultations at all levels.

The subcommittees set up within the framework of the UN-facilitated Yemeni peace talks concluded their joint meetings in Kuwait on Monday.

The UN-sponsored Yemeni peace negotiations started in Kuwait on April 21 as part of ongoing efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis. (pickup previous) rkf.nma.hrz.ma
