(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Egypt has decided to build a new prison the 10th jailhouse to be constructed since a 2013 military coup ousted the country's first-ever democratically elected leader.
Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar made the announcement late on Thursday saying the facility will be built in Qalyubia province just north of Cairo.
Egyptian human rights groups say there are more than 40 prisons across Egypt in addition to 382 detention centers inside police stations.
There are also a number of secret prisons run by the interior ministry and the military.
"Building prisons without paying attention to the legal violations that take place in other prisons is strange" legal activist Ahmed Mefrih told Anadolu Agency. "[It] shows that restricting freedoms is Egypt's top policy."
Thousands of supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi have been detained since August 2013 in an attempt to quell the unrest that followed the coup.
