Child born on Dubai-Philippines flight buried in India

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A Filipina nurse returning to her country from Dubai gave birth on an airplane last week but lost her prematurely-born child at an Indian hospital Indian media reported on Tuesday.

The nurse 40-year old Grace Alexandra was on board an Emirates flight that entered Indian airspace last week.

The incident prompted the diversion of the plane to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad so that Alexandra and the baby could receive treatment at the airport hospital. She was eventually taken to the hospital's branch at Jubilee Hills but the child died.

According to the reports Alexandra was unable to secure passage for the child's body to the Philippines and attempted to bury her at a local church. However she was told that only families registered with local churches can use plots to bury their loved ones.

She eventually received help from William D. Dar former director-general of International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) who referred her to Tourism Secretary B.Venkatesham.

According to reports the government of Telangana agreed to pay her hospital bills which were reduced on humanitarian grounds.
