Recent rains in March and April in the country's main dates producing regions haven't affected the production of dates so far according to industry experts. The season's first date crops were harvested in the wilayat of Dima Wa al Taien in North Shariqyah and other parts of the country on Monday. Oman is a leading exporter of dates to markets in Asia Africa and Europe.

Yousuf Yaqoob al Siyabi general manager of Samail Dates factory said 'We do not know if the inclement weather has affected the crops in any manner. We produce around 500000 tonnes of dates every year and export to India and other Asian countries as well as Africa and Europe. There is no shortage of Omani dates in the market and we have enough stocks to meet demand.' Another dates factory representative also said 'We have enough stocks to cater to the local market.'

Yaqoob bin Naseer al Siyabi owner of the Ibn Nasser al Siyabi Dates Factory said 'The hailstorm did affect some crops but we do not know if there is any damage. However there is no shortage of Omani dates in the market.'

Syed Abdullah al Kharousi chairman of Al Batinah Farmers Association added 'The farmers have not incurred any loss due to the weather conditions last month. The quality of dates too has been like previous years.'
