Friends of Cancer Patients Holds its Third General Assembly Congress


(MENAFNEditorial) Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), the support group for patients and families with carcinoma, held its third General Assembly Congress Meeting at its head office in Sharjah recently. The annual gathering saw FoCP Board members and representatives from the Ministry of Social Affairs approve the financial and administrative report for the group's 2015-2016 session and endorse the work plan for the next session. The activity was conducted in line with FoCP's commitment to administrative standards and the Ministry of Social Affairs' regulatory protocols for organising non-profit associations in the UAE. The meeting was attended by Her Excellency Ameera BinKaram, Founding Member and President of the Board of Directors of Friends of Cancer Patients society (FOCP); HE Nuha Mohammed Safar, Vice President of the Board; HE Areej Al Dwaik Rasoul, Secretary and Board Member; HE Sawsan Jafar, Board Member and Secretary of Funds; Rida Abdul-Fattah Abu Hijazi and Alia Al Abdouli, Representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs. Attending per procuration were HE Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of State for Tolerance and Founding Member of the Friends of Cancer Patients; Also present at the meeting were Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani, Board Member and HE Mohammed Juma Al Musharrekh, Board Member, as well as a number of other Board Members of FoCP; Dr. Sawsan Abdul Salam Al Madhi, Director General of FoCP; and Wardah Ibrahim, Director of Ernst & Young. HE Ameera BinKaram welcomed the attendees at the start of the meeting and gave credit for the support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and the generous patronage of the Wife of His Highness, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Founder and Patron of Friends of Cancer Patients, which have enabled FoCP to make a paradigm shift in cancer care within the Emirati community. The Founding Member and President of the Board of Directors of FOCP pointed out that the third General Assembly corresponds to its institutional approach, respect and commitment to regulations and laws governing voluntary non-profit organisations and civil society institutions in the UAE. After the meeting, HE Ameera BinKaram confirmed the report of the previous General Assembly, which was approved by Members of the Board of Trustees and ratified by representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs. The financial and administrative report of the previous session was also approved, along with the proposed plan and budget for the next session. They were ultimately ratified by representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs and members of FoCP board. For her part, Sawsan Jafar reviewed the administrative report of events and activities carried out by FoCP during the 2015-2016 session. The findings indicated that the total number of cases adopted by the FoCP from January 2015 to December 2015 reached 318, with the figure breaking down as 115 men, 194 women, and nine children. The report also indicated that FoCP donated AED 1,557,672 to provide moral, financial and medical support to these patients and their families. The members thanked the Ministry of Health, Sharjah University Hospital and all its strategic partners for their ongoing and continuous support to Friends of Cancer Patients. The report also indicated the success of FoCP in organising the first global forum for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which was held in November 2015 at Jawaher Conference Hall in collaboration with the NCD Alliance. The event saw the participation of important institutions and bodies, as well as a large group of experts and specialists from around the world concerned with NCDs. The report also reviewed the active participation of FoCP in the Emirates Oncology Conference, which was held in November 2015 at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. As part of its quest to achieve its goals in spreading awareness about cancer and the importance of early detection, FoCP organised a series of campaigns last year. Activities were held in the UAE and Sharjah, in particular at the 7th session of Sharjah Children's Reading Festival and the 34th session of Sharjah international Book Fair. FoCP also participated in the 12th summit of Corporal Social responsibility in Dubai, the 3rd Annual Government HR Summit in Abu Dhabi, DP World Tour Championship golf tournament in Dubai and the Bright Start Conference in Abu Dhabi. Through the Mole Talk initiative themed 'Listen to your Skin,' FoCP visited a number of schools in Sharjah, Dubai and Ajman, spreading awareness about skin cancer. With regards to festivals and celebrations, FoCP was actively present at the Salam Ya Seghar Flying Kites Festival, held in February 2015, through the 'Ana' initiative that spreads awareness around childhood cancer. FoCP also celebrated World Cancer Day with a group of cancer patients and survivors, while in April 2015 the group organised its first Umrah trip for cancer patients and their families.
