Japanese stocks tumble 3 per cent on yen's surge

Tokyo Rajab 25 1437 May 02 2016 SPA -- Japanese shares plunged 3 per cent Monday for the fifth straight trading day of decline with export-linked issues dragged down by the yen's sharp rise against major currencies dpa reported.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 518.67 points or 3.11 per cent to close at 16147.38 after falling as much as 4.14 per cent in the morning.
The broader Topix index fell 40.59 points or 3.03 per cent to close at 1299.96.
On currency markets at 3 pm (0600 GMT) on Monday the dollar traded at 106.55-56 yen down sharply from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 108.39-41 yen.
The euro was quoted at 122.19-23 yen down from 122.98-123.02 yen late Thursday.
