Me and my car: Toyota GT86

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) JAPAN IS RENOWNED for being the birthplace of drifting, a motorsport which involves controlled slides around corners. It also happens to be the nation which produces one of the world's best drifting cars, the Toyota 86. The 86 is a great example of an affordable performance car and this, 24-year old student Kim Young Jae's GT86 model, is a fine customisation specimen.
With a top speed of 233km/h, we decided to find out what it's like living with the beast along with Kim's motoring nirvana.

What would you be your dream ride?
I have a thing for a tube chassis. I would like a completely modified naturally aspirated American V8 with a tube chassis frame. On top of the chassis I'd like body panels created by some sort of fibre that are lightweight and strong to drive with an almost one to one power to weight ratio.

What's your most memorable road trip?
As I joined the car culture in the UAE after buying my Toyota GT86, I met up with a 86 car group. That was my introduction to others who think about the car in a similar way. We take small tours together and now I run that group.

Favourite car movie?
Most definitely The Fast and the Furious series. I like Tokyo Drift the best. I do drift now with the 86 and I have won a couple of competitions so it does make me feel like I'm part of the movie!

Do you think the Dubai lifestyle means there's a lot of pressure to get a nice car?
The pressure to get a nice car isn't actually there. But because of the luxurious lifestyle, most prefer one. However that's more of a show for others. If you like what you have, you should stay with it.

What's your favourite soundtrack while driving?
My car's noise is what I listen to most of time!

Can you put into words how your car makes you feel?
It makes me happy when I look at my championship results from many different competitions.

Did you get any help in sprucing it up?
This car is forever a work in progress. I have done everything on this car myself. I saw the garage just once to change the transmission.

Who do you think would win in a drag race between you with your car, Dick Dastardly and his whacky racer and Batman in his Batmobile?
I don't know their specs but I guess the whacky racer since he drives a sort of drag car. Mine and Batman's would be too heavy.
