Clerk accused of causing compatriot's death after drunken brawl

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A 50-year-old British clerk denied in the Court of First Instance on Sunday having unintentionally caused the death of a compatriot after he shoved off him as both of them were drunk.

The incident allegedly happened on October 16 last year outside a hotel in Tecom and was witnessed by several people.

A 34-year-old Pakistani man said that he was waiting for a cab outside the hotel with his friend when he saw two men apparently drunk screaming at each other. "They were few metres away from us before they moved to a nearby sandy yard. Then one of them punched the other on the chest and caused him to fall. The latter's head hit a small rock."

As the accused left the place in a taxi they called the police.

Another Pakistani witness gave a similar statement. "The victim tried to stand and talk but he could hardly breathe. He collapsed."

An Indian taxi driver said that the defendant travelled in his cab with another man and three women from outside the hotel that night. "He then stepped off and I saw him having a talk with the victim which did not seem amicable. I could hear a yelling."

The driver then saw the defendant pushing the victim on his chest with both of his hands causing him to fall down. "One of the women inside the car kept telling him to go but he would not listen."

A police lieutenant quoted the accused as claiming that the victim harassed one of his female friends. "When we caught him he claimed he only shoved the victim on the chest to keep him away. The victim then fell down and his head hit a solid object".

The victim's wife a 34-year-old Filipina said that her husband went to a birthday party but did not come back before midnight as he promised.

"I kept calling him in vain. Around 4am I got a call from a hospital telling me that he was there. I went to see him and found he was at the Intensive Care Unit. A doctor told me that he was physically assaulted" she told the prosecutor. She added that her husband died at noon the following day.

The forensic doctor said that the bleeding in the victim's stomach reached to his lungs and consequently caused a heart and breathing failure. This problem was worsened by the alcohol and the nervous state the victim was in.

He said that the victim had been suffering of heart and kidney problems. The bruises found on his body could not necessarily have caused his death.

The next hearing is set for May 18.
