Oman's second medical waste treatment plant has come up in Liwa. The plant has been set up by environmental solutions provider Averda which already operates one facility in Muscat in Al Multaqa.

The newly commissioned Liwa facility covers health units located in the governorates of North and South Batinah Dhahirah and Buraimi stated the company. Averda Oman's medical waste treatment services cover the waste handling and collection transportation treatment and disposal from all government-operated hospitals public and private clinics and health centres under the supervision and guidance of Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be'ah).

With two autoclave lines for medical waste treatment having a capacity of 150kg per hour and 200kg per hour the new facility doubles the daily treatment capacity in the country. The sterilised waste/bottom ash resulted from the incinerator line is sent to the municipal landfill for final disposal.

The treated waste is completely safe and inert as it is sterilised through the autoclave unit or exposed to very high temperatures in the incinerator for a long time. The regular monitoring procedures and laboratory tests in place assure a safe and environmentally friendly treatment process and disposal of the treated waste the company said.

Mohammad al Tohami Averda Oman MWTP manager said 'Our medical waste treatment facilities in both Al Multaqa and Liwa are 90 per cent automated and operational 18 hours a day seven days a week. We use the latest technologies for the treatment and safe disposal of hazardous medical waste.'
