German inflation negative in April as prices slip by 0.1%: stats office

(MENAFN- AFP) Inflation in Germany turned negative in April, dragged down by falling energy prices, a preliminary estimate showed on Friday.

Correcting an estimate published the day before, the federal statistics Destatis calculated that Germany's national inflation yardstick, the consumer price index, eased by 0.1 percent April, instead of edging up by 0.1 percent as it had first said.

In March, the inflation rate in Europe's biggest economy had stood at 0.3 percent.

Using the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) -- the barometer used by the European Central Bank -- the inflation rate was also back in negative territory at minus 0.3 percent in April compared with plus 0.1 percent in March.

The inflation data were a preliminary flash estimate calculated from consumer price data for six of Germany's 16 regional states.

Final data based on all 16 states will be published on May 13.
