UAE- Man referred to court for insults sent via SMS

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Misdemeanor Court has referred the case of a GCC national to the civil court for sending a series of insults and immoral words via SMS to the manager of a yacht importation company despite not knowing the defendant or having any disputes with him.

The victim told the court that he received 13 calls and SMS messages from the phone number of an unknown person. According to the victim he was busy and sent a message to the caller that he was unable to answer and would get in touch with him as soon as possible and was surprised when he started receiving a series of messages and insults against him and his family.

When he called the defendant the victim said he called to ask why he sent the messages but the defendant laughed and mocked him before hanging up and switching off his phone. The victim said he didn't sleep for two days as he waited for an apology which never came.

During the court hearings the judge asked the accused about the messages after first allowing the victim to read them out loud.

The suspect said he had lost his phone and that someone else had sent the messages. He said a number of other complaints had been lodged against him in Dubai and Sharjah for similar messages. The judge asked him for proof that the phone was lost.

In another case the Sharjah Misdemeanor Court charged a GCC woman who was found behaving abnormally on a Sharjah beach. A medical check revealed that the woman had taken tramadol for which the woman confessed.
