Kuwait- UN calls on Washington Moscow to save ceasefire in Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA April 28 (KUNA) -- UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura called Thursday on the US and Russia to renew their commitments to save the "deteriorating" ceasefire agreement in Syria.

In a press conference De Mistura made his remarks after briefing the UN Security Council in New York in a televised closed-session calling for a meeting by the supporting group to Syria to convene as soon as possible.

The special envoy also set a dateline for the new round of talks with US-Russia talks and the result of Syria support group when it take place.

De Mistura added the upcoming round of talks will be meaningful if a ceasefire continues at similar rates like in last march before the announcement of the new round of talks which validated the sincerity of the talks.

The UN envoy stressed the deteriorating ceasefire and aggression was something that cannot be ignored which was something he briefed the council about adding that such briefing coincided with the targeting of a field hospital in Aleppo and the killing of a doctor.

De Mistura also listed the main acts of violence in Syria since the start of talks on March 13th including the bombing in Sayeda Zainab area.

The envoy said violence now kills one Syrian every 25 minutes and injures another every 13 minutes and result of the previous round of talks since last February were diminished hours after a US-Russia ceasefire agreement to end violence in Syria.

De Mistura stressed importance on swiftly continuing and maintaining humanitarian aid delivery to thousands of Syrians that are put into danger.

The envoy affirmed that current efforts are exerted to ensure the continuous of talks and enable the UN from hosting one or two more round of talks before next July. (end) ta.mb
