Kuwait keen on supporting humanitarian issues across globe -- Min.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT April 27 (KUNA) -- Minister of Justice Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yacoub Al-Sanea stressed Kuwait's keenness on backing humanitarian issues and aiding needy people regardless of their race religion or sex across the world.

The minister made the statement in a speech while inaugurating the 15th meeting of General Assembly of International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) on Wednesday.

He said that the UN's honoring of Kuwait as a humanitarian center and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as a humanitarian leader was the fruit of the State's support for humanitarian action regionally and internationally.

Kuwait has been a leading country in providing relief aid to the afflicted Syrian Iraqi and Yemeni people and others suffering from disasters and disputes he said indicating that the State of Kuwait had hosted three international pledging humanitarian conferences for Syria.

The minister went on to say that Kuwait also co-chaired the fourth international pledging humanitarian conference held in Britain last February noting that these conferences led to pledges of USD 18 billion for aiding internally displaced persons IDP and Syrian refugees hosted by neighboring countries.

Kuwait pledged USD 1.6 billion for Syrians during these conferences USD 100 million for Yemenis and USD 200 million for Iraqis he stated.

IICO carries out projects like building schools and universities and caring for orphans widows divorcees people with special needs and elderly.

Meanwhile IICO President Abdullah Al-Matouq said in a speech that the meeting is held after sincere and tremendous efforts had been exerted over the last two years.

IICO projects are carried out by the support of His Highness the Amir the State and people and in cooperation with Kuwaiti charitable societies and international and regional humanitarian organizations he added.

According to UN figures the number of Syrian victims who have been suffering from their crisis since six years is about 13.5 million either IDPs or refugees out of 26 million the country's total population Al-Matouq pointed out.

This means that a Syrian out of two is either an IDP or a refugee he said.

On Yemen he noted that some UN figures showed that about 7000 people were killed and 35000 others wounded in a year in Yemen while three million others had to flee for safe shelters he said.

On Iraq Al-Matouq said there are three million internally displaced persons and so they are in a dire need of food aid and drinking water.

He referred that Kuwait's charitable action is carried out in collaboration with partners of GCC member states and international organizations in a bid to alleviate suffering of the conflict-affected countries.

He said the IICO established four model villages for Syrians in Turkey and Jordan adding that it also carried out several medical relief and education programs for Syrian refugees in Lebanon. (end) amn.amh.hm
