This is not the first time a sports player nearly had a 'freak'accident off the field here are a few casesfrom recent history where sports players got injured in freak accidents (source: The Mirror):

1. Santiago Canizares

'The bleach blond former Valencia number one might well be one of the unluckiest goalkeepers in Spain's history.

After Andoni Zubizarreta took his spot in the 90s Canizares won the right to be Spain's first-choice at the 2002 World Cup but dropped an aftershave bottle in the build up severed the tendon in his toe and was forced to miss out.'

2. Rio Ferdinand

'When playing for Leeds Rio Ferdinand managed to strain a tendon in his knee playing Pro Evo. Apparently he had his leg resting on the coffee table for too long.'

3. Alan Wright

'Wright made a name for himself at Aston Villa where the left-back made over 250 appearances.

Despite that lengthy career there is one story that stands our above anything he achieved on the pitch. Feeling flush Wright bought himself a Ferrari - but managed to sprain his knee reaching for the accelerator pedal.

He's 5 foot 4.'

4. Bryan Robson

'Ahead of the 1990 World Cup England captain Bryan Robson was given the unwanted challenge of trying to get Paul Gascoigne (who was fast asleep) out of his bed.

He tried he failed. After he picked the bed up and tipped Gazza out he then dropped it on his toe and broke it.'

5. Chic Brodie

Brodie shattered his knee when a pitch invading dog took him out:

6.Darius Vassell

The striker tried to dispose of a blood blister on his toe with a drill!
