ABU DHABI 26th April 2016 (WAM) -- Back in 2009 Dubai rolled out the longest driverless metro rail system in the world to which new lines and routes are being added as the city expands. Now the city is stretching our imagination about more driverless transport systems. You simply hop on and off and don't have to sit behind the wheel of a fuel-guzzling car wasting hours on the road getting to work and back when a new project is implemented for 2030.

An editorial published today in the daily newspaper Khaleej Times reiterated the plans of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai saying that he has grand plans for smart transport and connectivity. "This is a city that is open 24/7 all through the year and has a lot to offer to the visitor and resident. It connects the world like no other city does and it wants to connect itself better than any habitation on the planet" the editorial explained adding "This is Sheikh Mohammed's vision of a futuristic city which maximises human potential and resources while saving the government money when fossil fuels are fading out. What's important is that it will foster research and development which could drive the push towards Artificial Intelligence and robotics in every walk of life. The effect will transform the emirates' landscape and the way people commute."

The paper continued by saying that the move towards robot-driven passenger systems could also save energy and fits in well with power projects to develop alternative sustainable sources like solar and wind. "Sheikh Mohammed said artificial or driverless systems would slash transportation costs by 44 percent or AED900 million. That's not all. The government said AED1.5 billion could be saved because pollution would be reduced and more people would leave their cars at home and opt for public transport instead" it said.

"Technology has been summoned to make our travelling lives simpler. Smart Governance and Smart City projects are in full steam. With this Smart Transport initiative the UAE and Dubai are going the distance to make travel easier for all people" concluded the editorial.
