Quitting apps does nothing to save battery life: Experts

Tap and swipe: Many smartphone users regularly close down apps in the belief that this helps to preserve battery life. In reality it has no power-saving effect at all say the experts.

In fact manually closing apps so as to prevent them running in the background then restarting them may actually have a slightly negative effect on battery life.

This is because when an app hasn’t been used for some time it goes into waiting mode explained Yasmin Vetterl from Germany’s Chip magazine.

"In the background it consumes no energy" she said. If the app is opened again from this state it’ll take a little less power than a full restart would if the app had been closed by the user.

"In general better to let the system do its job; it was designed to manage running apps so you don't have to" Google’s Android chief Hiroshi Lockheimer said in a recent tweet.

So should users deliberately leave unused apps running because restarting them will cost battery power? Not really - according to Vetterl "that brings if at all only marginal power savings."

What does save battery is to shut down power-hungry network connections. Some apps check amazingly often for message updates.

But as far as computing operations inside the phone go on or off doesn’t make much difference either way. Just run the apps you want to keep at hand. The operating system will take care of the energy issue.
