DOHA: The highly anticipated Qatar National Library (QNL) is more than just a place where books are stored but a vital space for knowledge according to world-renowned architect Rem Koolhaas designer of the iconic building.

Koolhaas was speaking at a panel discussion on “The role of libraries in unleashing potential” at the 48th Metropolitan Libraries (MetLib) Conference currently underway at the Qatar National Convention Centre.

“This library particularly is considered an amphitheatre of knowledge that surrounds you the moment you enter. I’m very confident it will not be shelves that will dominate your impression but it will be knowledge” the Harvard University professor told the attendees.

Like in his past projects immersing into the country’s culture and history was a vital part of the process of designing the library he said adding QNL’s function has evolved from catering exclusively to students of various universities to the whole nation at large. “It started as a university library specifically addressing the different universities here as a connecting tool but now it has acquired an additional task-to open up itself to a nation as a national library” he explained.

The 42000sqm library which can hold 1.3mn books teems with special features rarely found in libraries anywhere in the world. With the evolving function of the library QNL incorporates special features such as a special event area and a restaurant as well as people mover book sorter system and compact shelving.

Speaking on how libraries leverage digital and technological advancement he said while QNL is technologically advanced he is happy it emphasizes the importance of the past with the presence of Islamic and Arabic collection.

The vast collection will be located in the Heritage Library which is situated below the building and uses dense shelving system and state of the art digital technology. On how libraries can contribute to unleash a children’s potential he said the QNL has a children’s library as another important feature. “There’s a space dedicated for children among others but the library itself has been designed in such a way that it tries to increase and satisfy the curiosity of children in many ways” he said.

Koolhaas said QNL will be a library open to different book users and it has been designed to express that invitation through its different entrances leading to the past present and future.
