Qatar elected chair of UN population session

Doha: Qatar has been elected Chair of the 50th session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development to represent the Asian Group.

Qatar was elected at the conclusion of the 49th Commission on Population and Development at UN headquarters in New York with the participation of the a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics.

The ministry took part in the session which dealt with the issue of strengthening the population base for 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda as a major theme for discussion and debate according to a statement issued by the ministry yesterday. The statement quoted Minister of Development Planning and Statistics H E Dr Saleh bin Mohammed Salem Al Nabit as saying that Qatar attaches great importance to the population issue and its relationship to the development process. He referred to efforts being exerted to launch youth capacities and investment in human development which constitute one of the most pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030.

Qatar has achieved many goals in the UN Secretary General’s report about the innovative programmes and innovations to enhance population’s evidence base as part of implementing recommendations of the international conference on population and development held in Cairo in 1994 he said. The ministry has orientations to modernise the statistical system to support the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders enhance data collection systems to meet its international obligations and achieve the integration of population issues in the second national development strategy.QNA
