Qatar- Workers gain basic language skills at ROTA programme


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Participants at Reach Out To Asia’s (ROTA) adult literacy programme.

DOHA: Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) recently held its adult literacy programme at Hamad Bin Khalifa University Student Centre in Education City. The programme aimed at helping participants improve their language skills as a means of enhancing their ability to achieve personal goals improve life opportunities and develop communication skills.

More than 290 volunteers helped low-income workers acquire basic English and Arabic language skills which will assist them to better communicate in their daily lives and help achieve their goals.

Rasmeya Hassan Al Jamali Community Development Specialist National Programmes Department ROTA highlighted the importance of unlocking human potential to develop cohesive communities built on solid foundations such initiatives which put significant importance on the development of society.

She said the adult literacy programme has proven to be an effective way to support low-income workers. It enables them to better communicate within their communities while equipping them with new teaching skills. It also an opportunity for volunteers to give back to the community.

Abdulaziz Al Kuwari a ROTA volunteer and student at Carnegie Mellon University Qatar said the experience gained during the programme was beneficial. “I learned a great deal about how education facilitates success and improves human lives while conversely I realised the personal importance of giving back” he said.

Douglas Njihia a participant said “I was happy to enrol in this beneficial programme which provided me with basic language skills. It has had a positive impact on my life enabling me to communicate better at work and in my social life.” Certificates of appreciation were awarded to trainers and trainees in recognition of their contributions to the 2015-2016 edition of ROTA’s Adult English Literacy (RAEL) and Adult Arabic Literacy (RAAL) programme. RAEL was introduced in 2009. It was created primarily to develop English literacy and language capabilities of low-income workers in the country. The Arabic version was launched in 2013.
