Qatar- ISESCO Chair in Alliance of Civilisations set up at QU

DOHA: Qatar University (QU) and the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) established an ISESCO Chair in Alliance of Civilisations at QU College of Shariah and Islamic Studies (CSIS).

An agreement was signed yesterday under which QU will provide administrative financial and technical support and facilities and services for implementation of programmes.

ISESCO will fund the Chair’s annual activities develop executive plans and specialised programmes and engage research and scientific organisations such as the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW). Both institutions will collaborate on developing studies and databases in areas of the alliance of civilizations specialisation; provide scholarships for graduate students involved in research activities and awards of appreciation for distinguished research projects.

They will also cooperate in joint seminars workshops conferences and training sessions on dialogue among different cultures and religions and related issues. The agreement was signed by QU President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham and ISESCO Director-General and FUIW Secretary-General Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri. Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari Cultural Adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar’s candidate for the Unesco director-general’s post; CSIS Dean Dr Yousuf Mahmoud Al Siddiqi and other officials from both organisations.

Dr Al Derham said “The establishment of the Chair aligns with QU’s efforts to fulfil the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the country’s plan for the Alliance of Civilisations 2014-2016 and serves to implement a course on Alliance of Civilisations in QU academic curriculum.” Dr Altwaijri said “The Chair which will contribute to shaping the future generation of graduates who are equipped with the mindset and tools to advance interfaith dialogue build a closer alliance between cultures and civilisations and address all aspects of extremism.”The Peninsula
