Qatar- FIFA chief briefed on 2022 work visits stadium

Doha: FIFA President Gianni Infantino currently on a three-day visit in Qatar yesterday met officials of Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy for an overview of the progress made for the 2022 World Cup.

The newly-elected global football chief also visited the Khalifa International Stadium one of the main venues to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

The stadium built in 1976 and renovated for the Asian Games in 2006 is undergoing comprehensive renovation to meet FIFA standards for World Cup stadiums.

As part of standards the stadium will include a new building to the east wing and a single roof will be built to cover the whole seating area.

The redevelopment also includes revamping the venue to include a seating capacity of 40000 during the tournament to be compliant with FIFA’s stadium requirements for hosting group round of 16 and quarter-final matches.

The 46-year old Swiss-Italian national is a key figure who has backed the idea of holding a winter World Cup in Qatar. He met senior members of the board of the committee and was given a clear picture of the overall progress of 2022 World Cup preparations.

Infantino arrived on Wednesday following a brief visit to Moscow Russia the hosts of the 2018 FIFA World Cup where he met President Vladimir Putin. He told Putin that he had seen “progress” in Russia’s preparations to host the tournament and praised the government for its work international news agencies reported.
