One night in Toko

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) IT'S A GET-together usually reserved for a Friday afternoon, however, in Dubai brunch doesn't necessarily indicate a daytime affair. Here the term 'brunch' is a by-word for an all-you-can-eat extravaganza and that you can do any time of the day in this town.

We went to one of the latest additions, Toko's Tuesday-night Asakusa 'izakaya' street food style offering. The Downtown Dubai restaurant-cum-club is one of the area's most popular spots and with this brunch we like the fact you can sample some of its best dishes for Dhs195 per person. Plus, as it's ladies night, female patrons received four free cocktails.

The evening brunch menu is called'Yugure' (Twilight), a five-course carte with every creation brought to your table. Highlights include the tuna tacos, a sushi selection and creamy mochi ice cream to finish.

We felt the best dishes were the most simple. The black cod, a staple in East Asian establishments, was superb mixed in with prawns and made into fish cakes, as was the salmon tartar. The crispy Peking duck salad with watercress & herbs and snapper ceviche were refreshing and light - great starters.

The main course was the only area which caused a smidge of consternation. The Japanese Angus burgers weren't strictly Japanese, but were tasty nonetheless. We would have perhaps preferred something a bit more traditional. The chicken and mushroom sie mai made up for it. Finishing off with the ice cream, overall, we went away thinking this scheme is a very cost effective way of trying out the restaurant.
