UAE- West Indies refuse to play in Pakistan


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Terrorist activities continue to push Pakistan into cricket exile with West Indies Team also declining to play two Twenty20 Internationals in the country.

West Indies has played down the request of the Pakistan Cricket Board to play two games of the Twenty20 Internationals for security reasons. The tournament will be played in the UAE later this year.

This is not the first time that a cricket team has declined to play in Pakistan for security reasons. After the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan in 2009 teams have been reluctant to visit the country. Six members of the team were injured in the attack.

The national teams have been forced to play their homes series at neutral venues in United Arab Emirates New Zealand and England.

Immediately after the attack New Zealand Cricket Team cancelled the tour to Pakistan citing risks to the team members.

In the background of attack on twin towers New Zealand cancelled a tour to Pakistan in 2001.

According to the media reports in March 2008 Australian cricket team withdrew from tour of Pakistan after a spate of bombing. In the same year Indian cricket team cancelled visit to Pakistan for Twenty 20 Internationals following the Mumbai attack.

In the aftermath of 9/11 attack New Zealand team cancelled their visit to Pakistan.

In 2012 Bangladesh team refused to tour Pakistan as a part of bilateral cricket series. The team again cited security reason in view of the attack on the Sri Lankan team.

Lahore bombing in 2016 led to the cancellation of visit of Afghanistan men and Kenya women cricket team to Pakistan.

Despite repeatedly assurances and invitations by the Pakistan Cricket Board all top Test Team have been escaping from touring Pakistan over the years.

Only Afghanistan Kenya and Zimbabwe agreed to play matches in Pakistan since 2009.
