Consul General meets Kuwait students in US city of Pocatello


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) By Samie Al-Dulaimi WASHINGTON April 19 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Consul General in Los Angeles Abdullatif Al-Yahya has held two separate meetings with national students in the city of Pocatello in the northwestern state of Idaho and Idaho University and local officials to discuss repeated offenses against the students.

The meeting with students was also attended by Kuwait's Cultural Advisor in Los Angeles Dr. Mansour Al-Jarragh Head of National Union of Kuwait Students in the United States (NUKS-USA) Fahad Al-Jadaan and Idaho University board chairperson and president.

"Our top priority is the safety of students academic and financial matters come next" Al-Yahya told KUNA.

"The goal of the meeting was to remove obstacles and help find solutions to students' complaints and end their suffering." Al-Yahya added that he has assured students that the Kuwaiti Ministry of Higher Education would do all in power to redress their grievances.

"The Ministry is working hard to provide students with convenient atmosphere for their study and to ensure their safety" he said.

He noted that the Higher Education Minister and his undersecretary has expressed readiness to offer "unprecedented exceptions for Kuwaiti students studying in this city" he said referring to Pocatello.

With regard to the meeting with the local officials Al-Yahya said that he has conveyed to the city governor and security officials Kuwait's dismay over the maltreatment and discrimination of Kuwaiti students as well as the lack of proper atmosphere for their study in the city.

The city officials have vowed to do their best to provide security for all Arab and Muslim students and to resolve their complaints Al-Yahya told KUNA.

He unveiled that the US officials have admitted the existence of racism in the rural city against foreign students who hail from 60 countries.

The officials also promised to launch an investigation into the issue and to exert more efforts to raise the local community awareness about the importance of foreign students for local economy he noted.

Al-Yahya stated that he has informed Higher Education Ministry Undersecretary Dr. Hamed Al-Azmi about the outcome of the two meetings and the local officials' pledges to deal with the issue.

During the discussion with Dr. Al-Azmi a proposal was put forward about exceptional freeze of Kuwaiti academic missions to this city for a year if students desired that until finding an alternative university in the US or any other country for them. (end) sd.ibi
