Qatar- Muaither Al Shamal advance in Emir Cup


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Action from the first round of the Emir Cup matches at the Al Arabi Stadium in Doha yesterday. Muaither defeated Al Shahaniya 4-1 while Al Shamal trounced Al Markhiya 3-1.

DOHA: Muaither edged Al Shahaniya 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out while Al Shamal trounced Al Markhiya 3-1 in the opening day matches of the 44th edition of the Emir Cup to move into the second round here yesterday.

The match between Muaither and Al Shahaniya the two sides which will feature in next season’s Qatar Stars League was locked goalless at the end of the normal 90 minutes of play forcing the organisers to apply the penalty shoot-out top break the impasse.

In the other match Al Shamal took the lead in the tenth minute through Ali Faridon.

In the second half Saeed Boutahar made it 2-0 scoring in the 74th minute while Faridon added a second one in the 84th minute.

Daniel pulled one back in injury time for Al Markhiya.

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) had announced that there will be no extra time allowed in Emir Cup matches and penalty kicks will be used to decide the winners if games finish with same scores in regulation time.

Extra times are used when teams fail to get an outright winner after 90 minutes of play.

The decision has been taken into account since Qatar Stars League sides Lekhwiya and El Jaish have a busy AFC Champions League games in early May.

The move comes to allow rest to players of Lekhwiya and El Jaish in case they win their next AFC Champions League clashes in first week of May.

The tournament is open for 14 QSL sides and four Second Division sides of the Qatargas League. The Emir Cup will be played out in five phases and at three venues. The most keenly-awaited football tournament in the country Emir Cup will end on May 20.

All of the games will be telecast live by Al Kass Sports Channel and other media outlets throughout the five stages of the event. The organisers have planned a series of activities for the April 18 to May 20 period it was announced at the draw ceremony yesterday. Muaither topped the Qatargas League with 44 points last month to qualify for the QSL.

Al Shahaniya finished second in the Qatargas League with 38 points.

Al Shamal and Al Markhiya are the other teams which saw action in this year’s Qatargas League.
