Obama expects Mosul to be retrieved from IS by end of year

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON April 18 (KUNA) -- US President Barack Obama expects the Iraqi city off Mosul to be retrieved from so-called Islamic State (IS) "by the end of the year." In a recorded interview aired Monday on CBS News Obama said "my expectation is that by the end of the year we will have created the conditions whereby Mosul will eventually fall" reiterating "as we see them willing to fight and gaining ground we must make sure that we are providing them more support.

"We are not doing the fighting ourselves but when we provide training when we provide special forces who are backing them up when we are gaining intelligence -- working with the coalitions that we have -- what we've seen is that we can continually tighten the noose" he said.

This comes as US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announces from Baghdad around 200 more troops and equipment assistance including Apache helicopters to support the fight in Iraq against IS. (end) yt.bs
