EU, Tunisia agree to strengthen bilateral ties


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS April 18 (KUNA) -- The EU and Tunisia agreed on Monday to deepen their bilateral ties following a ministerial EU-Tunisia meeting in Luxembourg held on the sidelines of an EU foreign ministers meeting.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemais Jhinaoui said: "They have agreed to further strengthen our relations and cooperation as part of a privileged partnership." He noted that Monday's meeting is "an opportunity for them to set out to our European partners their vision for future relations with the EU as part of the new neighbourhood policy. Tunisia hopes with their European strategic partner to strengthen their relations to make them stronger deeper and broader." Jhinaoui also stressed the importance that they face up to the terrorism threat which threatens the whole region and also to meet the legitimate needs and expectations of the Libyan people who for years now have suffered from the absence for a central government.

On her part EU High Representative Federica Mogherini told the joint press conference that they are very much aware of the fact that Tunisia is faced with immense and interconnected challenges security socio-economic challenges.

"Tunisia can count on the EU in particular on the light of this situation which young people in Tunisia and the youth of European Union are facing. EU's objective remains to provide the young Tunisians with prospects for the future so that they can see the day they have a genuine place in the society in their country" she added. (end) nk.mt
