Press Syndicate launches general conference

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) The Press Syndicate launched its fifth general conference on Sunday, amid ongoing events as the syndicate marked its diamond jubilee last week.

The general conference will take place over four days and will include seminars and discussion forums on several topics related to freedom of the press, the legislative media environment, and the challenges facing journalists' economic and social rights.

The conference will host different speakers from the renowned press community. Former head of the Press Syndicate spoke at the opening session on Sunday.

There have been a number of pending issues related to journalists' work in Egypt, as well as the media. A unified press and media law draft project is yet to be issued. Journalists are still facing imprisonment for violating publishing laws, which have come under criticism for being too restrictive.

Moreover, the expansion of online media outlets has left journalists and workers in the field deprived of basic labour rights, such as contracts and minimum wages.
