Bike to the future

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) ARGUABLY THE GREATEST sequel of all time - we're sorry Godfather II - Back to the Future II is a wonderful glimpse into the then futuristic 2015 and a revisit to 1955 California. The film is a decent analogy for the Harley-Davidson SuperLow 1200T. In it we have a similar merging of styles. On one hand it harks back to a petrolhead heyday where more chrome and noise equalled more enjoyment, yet on the other you've got elements such as keyless start, digital gear indicator and automatic headlights, which brings us careering into 21st century practicality.

In short, we love this bike because it ticks so many boxes. Let us explain.

It is fair to say a few bikers may be intimidated by Harleys because of their perceived size and a few kinks with much older models resulting in an unjust reputation - namely the vibration that comes with having such a large engine. Let's put the latter to rest first off. We sometimes found a touch of vibration just in between third and fourth gear, but honestly nothing uncomfortable nor excessive. Consider the fact there's a 1200cc engine beneath you and you'll be surprised at how smooth the ride actually is. And that is because the 'T' in this model's name stands for 'tourer.' Harley has taken a regular Sportster bike, upped the engine capacity and built this one for those long-haul, windy-road rides. We adored it for this reason. Glinting in the sun, wind rushing around the open desert roads, we were transported back to the biker movies of the mid 20th century. Nobody could stop us from where we wanted to get to. The road was our only master. 140km/h was achieved with no issues though if you want more than that, this isn't the bike for you.

Romantic notions aside, the particulars of actually living with this machine also add up. It is light. At only 260kg, it is not a struggle to weave about on and is thus a decent run-around. We went to work on it every day and we haven't had as much fun in ages. Clunking those gears into place, shifting up and down as traffic lights and other road-users made themselves apparent was simply a laugh.

But nothing can put more of a stupid grin on your face than firing the bike up for the first time in the morning. That gurgle, much like watching Doc Brown and Marty McFly on their adventures, is enough to elevate you out of any mood.
