Oman- Tent Pegging World Cup: Safwan al Ma'amari grabs silver

Oman's Safwan al Ma'amari claimed an individual silver on Friday to open the sultanate's tally at the second Tent Pegging World Cup that is underway in Cairo Egypt.

Safwan won the medal in the lance and peg competition that was won by an Iraqi rider.

A total of 11 countries are competing in the second edition of the tent pegging World Cup which will conclude on April 19.

Besides Safwan the Oman team comprises Hilal al Balushi Khamis al Balushi Yousef al Ma'amari and Hamad al Riyami. Mansoor al Mahrouqi is accompanying the riders as coach.

The participating countries at the worlds are hosts Egypt Oman UK South Africa Iraq UAE Australia India Sudan Jordan and Yemen.

ITPF council approves three new members

The International Tent Pegging Federation's (ITPF) council held a meeting of its members on the sidelines of the World Cup under the chairmanship of Mohammed Issa al Fairuz the ITPF president from Oman.

During the meeting three countries - Germany Belarus and Palestine - were welcomed as new members of the ITPF raising the membership to 31 nations.

Fairuz said 'There have been interest from a few other nations as well but we have yet to receive any formal letter from them.'

The ITPF headquarters are based out of Muscat and the world body's chief said Oman is keen to spread the game globally.

'We are a young international sports federation and in a span of less than three years we now have 31 countries representing three continents - Asia Africa and Europe' he said.
