Turkey- Brazil: Rousseff loses key allies ahead of impeach vote

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff faced increasing pressure Wednesday as two former coalition parties in her government said they will vote for her impeachment in a key poll in the Chamber of Deputies.

Her coalition centered on the ruling Workers Party was left by the Progressive Party that has 47 deputies in the chamber and also by the Republican Party with 22 members that were told to vote in favor of a political trial.

Rousseff is accused of violating fiscal rules to mask budget problems in the lead up to the 2014 presidential elections.

The process depends on the 513-member Chamber of Deputies which will start discussing Friday whether to continue with the impeachment process.

To move forward it will require a two-thirds majority of 342 votes for the measure to go to the Senate.

Vice President Michel Temer who would take the leadership of the country in case the Senate approves impeachment said Wednesday that he “is prepared” to take over the leadership of the country if Rousseff can no longer serve.

Temer’s statements come one day after portions of a recording from a speech were leaked online in which he announces measures for a transitional government after the eventual removal of the president.

Rousseff said Wednesday that she has decided to “fight till the last minutes” to save her administration.

Although according to local media Cabinet members admit the possibility of a defeat this Sunday.

“There is consensus that the government faces its worst moment” the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper said.
