Mad about movies: Your weekly previews

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) This week's biggie blockbuster The Jungle Book looks on course to set cinemas alight. A mixture of a rebooted well-loved story, cross-cultural characters and big budget Hollywood effects mean it is going to appeal to a vast segment of cinema-goers.

The story looks pretty similar to the Disney cartoon of the '60s we all know and love although they're being very tight-lipped as to whether the songs will remain unchanged.

'Man cub' Mowgli (Neel Sethi) survives and grows up in the Indian jungle raised from birth by wolves. Aged nine, tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) arrives on the scene and orders Mowgli out of the jungle, threatening any animal who gives him shelter. Thus begins Mowgli's journey back to mankind, helped by Baloo the Bear (Bill Murray) and Bagheera the panther (Ben Kingsley).

Trivia
. Iron Man director and Pete Becker from Friends, Jon Favreau, takes the helm.

Criminal

Starring the usually criminally dull Kevin Costner, this unimaginatively titled movie actually looks like it may be worth a shot.

Costner plays a dangerous convict whom, after the death of a CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds), is implanted with the deceased's memories in order to finish an assignment. Cue a lot of typical body-swap movie nonsense, but underneath all that is a semi-decent story in which Costner's presence is genuinely menacing. Plus we really liked his recent appearance on Graham Norton, so we're going to give this a thumbs up.

There are currently no ratings for this film.

Trivia
. Kevin Costner and Criminal co-stars Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones all appeared in 1991's JFK
