Russia says Geneval talks should lead to early elections in Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW April 13 (KUNA) -- Settlement negotiations among the Syrian parties in Geneva should lead to agreements on enacting a new constitution and holding early elections said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday.

Lavrov speaking at a news conferemce with his visiting Argentinian counterpart said parliamentary elections currently held in Syria "are designed to bestow legitimacy upon the constitutional state apparatuses and avert power vaccum." The negotiations in Geneva should result in constitutional reforms holding early elections on the basis of the new constitution that should be approved by all the parties he added. He also called for including the Kurds in the UN-sponsored talks.

His statement coincided with preparatory consultations by the UN envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura currently on a shuttle mission in the Middle East.

Although several rounds of talks have not resulted in a viable settlement the Syrian government announced holding today parliamentary elections drawing criticisms from some super powers namely Washington. (end) as.rk
