GCC rush to help Yemeni people to ultimately restore stability


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT April 13 (KUNA) -- The Arab Gulf countries had immediately acted to help Yemen and support its stability and territorial unity once the Saudi-led coalition announced on April 21 2015 end of operation "decisive storm" and launch of operation "renewal of hope." UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) have announced that at least six million Yemeni people were suffering from lack of food security and were in dire need of urgent food supplies. People in 10 out of 22 Yemeni provinces did not have anything to eat.

This has triggered the UN and its relief agencies to launch an appeal for USD 274 million to honor urgent humanitarian needs in Yemen.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz in less than 24 hours since the appeal was launched announced provision of the entire sum for Yemen a gesture reflecting how responsible the Saudis were towards their Yemeni brethren.

Saudi Arabia in a bid to organize the collection and distribution of aid opened King Salman relief and humanitarian action center last May.

These were not the first or only Saudi aid for the Yemeni people. The Kingdom's assistance for Yemen during the 2010-15 period were USD 3.25 billion which would be deposited in Yemeni Central Bank to support the local currency.

Saudi Arabia also allocated another USD 1.75 billion to finance development economic health and academic projects in addition to USD 500 million to fund Saudi exports to Yemen.

Saudi Arabia's development fund contributed USD 100 million to support electricity sector in Yemen and other development projects.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) had also rushed to help the Yemeni people and contributed to restoring security and stability in the country.

The UAE offered in 2015 USD 138.5 million to Yemen to be the world's largest relief assistance provider for the country which represented around 31 percent of global aid in the first six months last year.

The UAE provided food supplies medical equipment and medication and clean water.

The UAE dispatched six airplanes last June carrying food to the Yemeni people and in August the UAE Red Crescent allocated USD 81 million to support its relief operations in Yemen.

Kuwait part of its quest to alleviate suffering of the Yemeni people donated USD 100 million upon instructions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to support relief efforts in Yemen.

Kuwait Red Crescent Society succeeded in collecting more than USD four million.

Kuwait has long been strong supporters of the Yemeni people. The country offered USD 500 million to Yemen during a ministerial meeting for the friends of Yemen which was held in New York US in 2012.

Qatar and Bahrain provided thousands of tons in humanitarian supplies food and medications to help alleviate suffering of the Yemenis.

Oman offered 5000 tons of aid for the needy Yemenis while also providing assistance to people in areas of conflicts. (end) gh.bs
