(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) 'IT COULD HAVE turned out a little gimmicky, but it actually really works.' So said one of our diners as we made our way down to the lively restaurant village at Le Meridien Dubai. There we found Thai eatery Songkran, a traditionally decked out restaurant reminiscent of Bangkok's fine dining establishments. The comment was directed towards the bistro's décor. Almost set up to look like part of a Thai township, the wooden pillars and points, not to mention the traditional dancer and musician, really work to put you in the mood.
Taking our seats with a great view of the central performance area, we were informed we were going to receive a sneak peek of this week's upcoming Songkran menu, available from April 13 to 15. Songkran is a Thai water festival signifying purity and the new year. This Songkran, Sukothai will be hosting an all-you-can-eat buffet (some main courses cooked to order) including house beverages if you so wish, from 7pm to 11pm over the three nights.
The dishes on offer are one-offs. Dreamt up by Consulting Chef Chitlada Thanomsak, winner of the first Thai Super Chef Contest in 2003, you won't find many of her creations on the normal carte.
We went for a few concoctions to put the chefs to the test. Our absolute winners of the evening had to be the chicken satay sticks (okay, stop laughing, we know they're standard fare) which were succulent and that peanut sauce was magnificent. Then came a batch of exquisitely crafted dumplings filled with chicken and drizzled with a coconut syrup. Unfortunate for a review page, but we can't begin to describe how delicious these were. Finally a lobster red curry provided a decent amount of spice to prepare us for a Thai red rubies dessert we all really enjoyed. The menu including beverages is Dhs249 per person.
