(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Government and the National Assembly (Parliament) are currently working out a set of legislations intended to remedy economic issues, affirmed MP Dr Yousef Al-Zalzalah on Sunday. "We are seeking to accomplish them in proper time for sake of salvaging the economic conditions that have been deteriorating since years ago," said Dr Al-Zalzalah, addressing a seminar, themed "Kuwait present challenges and future horizons," organized by the Primary Education Faculty.
Dr Al-Zalzalah mentioned some "hurdles and challenges" hindering this approach; namely the State dependence solely on oil revenues, over many years in the past, and multiple changes of governments and parliaments.
However, the parliament due to the political stability, witnessed in the past three years, managed to endorse a package of legislations, as the Government succeeded in accomplishing many development ventures. He also noted in this respect that the government moved ahead on that path after placing the right man at the right post and grilling complacent and slack officials.
As to effects of declining oil prices, he cited an affirmation by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah that they would not affect the State development schemes. The parliamentary priorities committee is playing a crucial and primary role in following up on the projects, staying in touch with officials in charge of each of the ventures.
Now, the parliament compels the Government to reveal number of the ventures, cost of each one, ahead of adopting the State Budget, he explained. For his part, Dr Mohammad Al-Rumeihi, the former dean of the Sociology Faculty, called on the State to craft "a clear roadmap for cementing the national belonging, fomenting the rule of law and ensuring citizens equality."
The gathering, attended by MPs, academics and experts, addressed national accomplishments after Kuwait was designated by the UN as the "Humanitarian Center," as well as its celebration as the Kuwait Capital of Islamic Culture for 2016, in addition to its quest to be transformed into a regional financial hub. Conferees are also debating various issues on development, citizenship, economic and financial conditions and media impact on development.
At the gathering inauguration, Dr Issa Al-Meshaiee, Deputy Director General of the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET), addressed a statement on behalf of the Director General, hailing His Highness the Amir for protecting Kuwait in face of external crises. His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, had been designated the "Humanitarian Leader" due to his leading role in aiding people in need worldwide.
