Yemeni VP calls on UN to pressure rebels more


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RIYADH April 11 (KUNA) -- Yemeni Vice President Ali Al-Ahmar on Monday called on the UN to put more pressure on rebels in order to implement UN resolution 2216.

Al-Ahmar's remarks came during his meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad as Al-Ahmar briefed him with breaches by Houthis and militias of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since the start of the cessation of hostilities especially in the governorate of Ta'ez Saudi Press Agency reported. The UN-sponsored cessation of hostilities began April 10th.

On his part Sheikh Ahmad underlined importance that all Yemeni parties show good intent in reaching an agreement at the anticipated peace talks slated April 18th in Kuwait.

Meanwhile Yemeni Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abulmalek Mikhlafi said during his reception of US Ambassador to Yemen Matthew Tueller that his government is significantly cooperating with the UN envoy in a bid to resume peace talks and jump-start the political process according to the GCC Initiative and outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference.

On his part Ambassador Tueller reiterated his country's support for the political process in Yemen and the implementation of resolution 2216.

Resolution 2216 calls upon all Yemeni parties in particular the Houthis to abide by the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Initiative and its Implementation Mechanism the outcomes of the comprehensive National Dialogue Conference and relevant Security Council resolutions and to resume and accelerate inclusive UN-brokered negotiations including on issues relating to governance to continue the political transition in order to reach a consensus solution and stresses the importance of full implementation of agreements reached and commitments made towards that goal.
