Doha: The Physiotherapy Department at Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Rumailah Hospital in collaboration with the Australian-based McConnell Institute recently organized a training course on manual physiotherapy for around 30 physiotherapists from across HMC.

Noora Al Mudahka Chief of the Physiotherapy Department highlighted that the course was aligned to HMC’s commitment to upgrading the skills and efficiency of its therapists in administering the latest techniques and delivering high quality healthcare services to all patients.

She explained: “The McConnell concept is a novel therapeutic technique developed by Australian physiotherapist Jenny McConnell and is based on the use of an adhesive tape on affected areas of the body to enable mechanical realignment and the correction of misalignments in joints as well as to help reduce pain.”

The McConnell Institute provides training for physical therapists athletic trainers and other healthcare practitioners to improve the management of chronic musculoskeletal problems.

The McConnell concept for the management of musculoskeletal problems is based on understanding both the symptoms and the causative factors and addressing each of these using an adhesive tape technique and specific muscle training.

“We at HMC’s Physiotherapy Department are always keen to adopt evidence-based models of treatment to ensure that our patients are provided with safe and effective care” added Al Mudahka.

Manual physiotherapy expert and faculty member at the renowned Australian Neurodynamic Institute Alvio Alpacini led lectures at the course.

Participants at the course were able to acquire new skills which could be immediately put into practice.

They also gained insights into the biomechanical assessment of patients and the management of complex musculoskeletal problems as well as providing patients with simple strategies to better manage their conditions themselves. The Peninsula
